How to Get a Free Breast Pump
Detailed instructions on how to get a free breast pump from your insurance company.
The basics: ask your pediatrician, OB, or primary care doctor for a prescription for a medically necessary DOUBLE ELECTRIC BREAST PUMP. Call your insurance company and ask for a list of durable medical equipment providers from which you may order your pump. Call the supplier and determine which pumps they carry and make your choice. (Many women have had good results with Better Living Now, at 1-800-854-5729 or McKesson, at 1-844- 727-6667). Submit your prescription and they will send you the pump. Some allow you to receive your pump before you deliver, others after. Not all insurance companies/plans offer the same coverage, but in general, this is the procedure. Some insurance plans allow you to order whatever you like and will reimburse up to a certain amount.
TennCare does include pump coverage; call your provider for information
Please note that while a breast pump can be extremely helpful to working moms or moms who need to get out of the house without a nursling in tow, breast pumps are NOT an indicator of supply. A properly latched baby is far more efficient than any machine, and so we help moms to work at keeping the baby at the breast to perfect the latch rather than immediately supplementing with pumped milk.
If you are unable to get an adequate pump through these means, please apply to receive a free double electric pump from our group, generously donated by Ameda.
